Concrete and abstract word production of school-aged children with autism spectrum disorders in noun and verb

Abstract
This study was aimed to examine the role of abstractness and word class in word production in spontaneous speech of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The participants were 36 children; 12 children with ASD, 12 typical development children matched on chronological age (CA) with the ASD, and 12 typical development children matched on language age (LA) with ASD. The utterance samples were collected through conversation with examiner and picture description procedure. Total number of words (TNW) and number of different words (NDW) according to abstractness (abstract and concrete word) and word classe (noun and verb) were measured. The results of the study were as follows: There were main effect according child group, abstractness, and word class. The ASD group produced significantly fewer TNW and NDW than the CA group, TNW and NDW of concrete words and noun were significantly higher than abstract words and verb each. There were significant interaction effect in word class¡¿child group, abstractness¡¿word class¡¿child group in TNW and abstractness¡¿word class, abstractness¡¿word class¡¿child group in NDW. In TNW, the ASD group produced significantly fewer verb, concrete and abstract verb than both of the CA and LA group however, the LA group produced significantly fewer TNW than the CA group in abstract verb only. In NDW, the ASD group produced significantly fewer concrete nouns, concrete and abstract verbs than the CA group. This study demonstrated that word production of children with ASD in spontaneous speech were closely related to abstractness and class of word.
